Tomatis Listening Therapy
“The Tomatis® Method is a natural approach to neurosensory stimulation. Its listening programs change the music and voice in real time in order to capture the brain’s attention and to develop motor, emotional and cognitive skills. Developed by the French Doctor and Researcher, Alfred Tomatis, the Tomatis® Method relies on an advanced technology and the excellence of its trained professionals on how to use it.” [according to Tomitis website]
I heard about this intervention a year before we tried it and honestly thought it sounded pretty out there and crazy. But once we started learning about neuroplasticity and were needing to do something to help the boys with sensory integration we decided to do it. We did two intensives (3 weeks each) with a two month break in between. For the first intensive the boys listened to the headphones, mostly passively, for up to 30 minutes a day. For the second intensive they did more purposeful creative play and did up to 45 minutes.
Overall we found it a really fascinating experience. We were both pretty sceptical but with openness to give it a try. And after each intensive River had a language explosion. After the first time we thought it must have been a coincidence but then after the second time, we thought there might be something to this. We want to do more of these in the coming year.
